Introduction
Patrick and Betina, proud parents to three beautiful kids: Norah, Tristan, and Konrad. Tired of the daily grind on land, they decided to take a different path in life. Theyâre pausing to experience life with their children during these precious formative years. Their journey started in Denmark, and theyâre bound for the Mediterranean. But for them, itâs not just about the destination; the journey itself is the real goal. Theyâre focused on learning and passing down lifeâs most essential values, the ones cherished by true sailors.
Brief description of the Shipyard, Sailboat and the engine.
Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42.1, The Sun Odyssey 42.1 , was introduced in the 1992 . Designed by naval architect Guy Ribadeau Dumas. This version was produced only during 3 years until 1995.

The boat is from 1995 and was powered with a Yanmar 4JH2E, the engine mounts were never replaced. But they should have been so as to complete such an important and ambitious project.
The Yanmar 4JH2E is a marine diesel engine produced by the Japanese company Yanmar Co., Ltd. This engine is part of Yanmar’s extensive line of marine engines designed for use in sailboats and small powerboats. The 4JH2E is known for its reliability, efficiency, and compact size, making it a popular choice among boat owners and builders.
The engine’s 4-cylinder design made it suitable for 35-45 foot Sailboat vessels . The 4JH2E is known for its durability and ability to withstand the harsh marine environment, including exposure to saltwater and continuous use. While newer models and technologies have emerged in the marine engine market, the 4JH2E Â remains a classic choice for those who appreciate its simplicity and dependability.
Replacing the engine mounts. Video recorded steps.
1.- Briefing of the process of replacement of the marine engine mounts
In this section of the video, Patrick gives a brief explanation of how he plans to carry out the replacement process before he actually begins the work.
2.- DISCONNECTING THE SHAFT
In this portion of the video, Patrick disconnects the shaft coupling while offering his recommendation to engage the gear in reverse.
3.- REPLACEMENT OF THE MARINE ENGINE MOUNTS.
In the upcoming video, Patrick swaps out the old marine engine mounts with new ones set at a height similar to the previous Yanmar marine engine mounts. He prepares all four engine mounts for shaft alignment.
4.-EXAMINATION OF THE OLD MARINE ENGINE MOUNTS
In this section of the video, Patrick inspects the old marine engine mounts and assesses their extent of damage. He also provides an explanation of the potential repercussions for his boat if he had not replaced the marine engine mounts.
5.- SETTING THE NEW MOUNTS AT THE CORRECT HEIGHT
In this part of the video, Patrick provides instructions on adjusting the new marine engine mount to match the same height. This situation is similar to another case involving an Oceanic Ellebogener (SV KRAIT) using a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3, as shown in this link: https://ellebogen.com/us/yanmar-4jh4e-engine-mount-replacement/ . It appears that the marine engine mounts need to be set at a very low level on this particular sailboat model. This is why ELLEBOGEN includes an extra low-height nut.
This is a dependable and proven solution that has enabled our Oceanic Ellebogener, SV Krait, to successfully sail from Greece to the Caribbean. You can learn more about SV Krait here: https://ellebogen.com/us/ellebogeners/#svkrait. Patrick also highlights the advantages of utilizing Nordlock washers.
6.-ALIGNMENT PROCESS
Patrick explains the process of alignment. This process can also be checked on this link https://ellebogen.com/us/engine-bed-flatness-and-correct-process-for-alignment/
OUR GRATITUDE TO PATRICK AND HIS TEAM AND WISH OF LUCK FOR HIS JOURNEY TO THE MEDITERRANEAN.
At Ellebogen we wanted to express to Patrick and his super team our gratitude for the informative video, regarding the replacement of Yanmar engine mounts with Ellebogen mounts. The well-explained tutorial has been an invaluable resource for many of us in the nautical community, and your dedication to sharing your knowledge is truly commendable.
We had the pleasure of meeting them in person and share a breakfast as they passed our hometown of Hondarribi.
FIVE GONE SAILING: Konrad loved the cakes, although his expression appeared quite skeptical.
During his journey they caught a rope in north of france in Normandy, that forced them to call the French marine rescue services. More information here : https://fivegonesailing.com/travel-blog/seafaring-surprises-a-day-afloat-that-didnt-go-as-planned . Ellebogen, was particularly interested to check the status of the mounts. As it can be seen on the below picture the status of them was untouched.

Patrick and Betina are doing something remarkable. Living with the essentials makes us value them. Returning home for Christmas is also part of their plans, which is especially important for their children. Recognizing the marvels of nature and understanding that every sunrise is a daily miracle is something our daily routines often prevent us from seeing. From Ellebogen, we salute and commend “HATS OFF FIVE GONE SAILING.”
