YANMAR 2GM20. VIDEO RECORDED REPLACEMENT REPORT BY BRICOLAJE NAUTICO YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Sailboat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 29.2, moored in Port Masnou Marina (Barcelona)

2 ELLEBOGEN 75 (Ref. 128270-08341) and 2 ELLEBOGEN 100 (Ref. 128377-08351)

Sergi and Montse are the owners of the Jalapenyu Sailing boat and run their own Youtube channel called “Bricolaje nautico” (Nautical DIY).  Sergi is an automotive mechanic at his own company. His wife Montse, runs her own business which specializes in decoration. Both publish tutorials of interest to Sailing vessel owners. Using their complementary skillsets, they deal with topics relating from the general outfitting of the boat to troubleshooting engine problems. Sailing is their passion and thanks to the extraordinary climate that they enjoy on the Mediterranean coast they spend a great amount of time on their boat.

Rafal, the owner of another Sailboat, contacted Sergi, as he wanted to find a solution to some issues he had encountered. An oil leak, the change of the flexible engine mounts and the valve clearance adjustment. Sergi went to Port Masnou, where both carried out the work which they recorded and later uploaded to the channel. The tutorial did not stop there, they went back to the boat 48 hours after the installation of the mounts in order to make the final alignment to the prop shaft. The quality of instruction in the video is outstanding and from our point of view it is, without doubt, the best video available on these topics.

Since the original video is in Spanish, the aim of our case study is to set out all the steps with the instructions given in English, so that the sailboat community can get a better understanding of the process.

1. BASELINE OF THE SITUATION OF THE ENGINE

As can be seen, the engine is shown with the old mounts. Sergi also ups the revs to see the reaction of the engine.

2. PREPARING THE ENGINE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FLEXIBLE ENGINE MOUNTS

Sergi prepares the engine so that the mounts can be replaced. To support the engine he uses a thick wooden cradle and a thick timber layer to spread the load over the widest possible area on the engine bed. After that he unbolts the propeller shaft.

3. UNBOLTING THE MOUNTS

Sergi unbolts the 2 bottom bolts of the baseplate fixed to the engine bed and then unbolts the top nut that is fastened to the engine bracket. He keeps the reference of the height of the levelling nut  of the disassembled mount for future reference.

4. VIDEO OF THE ENGINE WITH THE NEW ENGINE MOUNTS

In this section of the video, the engine is shown with the recently installed Ellebogen mounts. In order to see the difference between the old mounts a side to side video shows a “before and after” view of the mounts.

5. ALIGNMENT OF THE PROP SHAFT 48H AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF THE FLEXIBLE ENGINE MOUNTS

Sergi explains how the alignment is done with shims. After the correct Alignment is done a video is shown of the overall status of the engine.
