CASE STUDY: ENGINE MOUNT REPLACEMENT ON A VOLVO PENTA D1-30 WITH ELLEBOGEN GTM SDD40 MOUNTS.

Sailboat: 2004 Beneteau 331 Clipper, moored in Genova, Italy.

Información sobre el motor

The Volvo Penta D1-30 is a small, three-cylinder Mitsubishi-based marine diesel engine introduced in 2005This engine replaced the MD2030, which had been Perkins Shibaura-based since 1990.

The Volvo Penta D1-30 is widely known because it was installed in many production sailboats during the active boatbuilding years of the mid-2000s and fits perfectly within the typical power range needed for cruising yachts. Its strong reputation comes from reliability, useful low-rpm torque, acceptable noise and vibration, and the extensive global support network for parts and service. Overall, it became one of the most recognizable small marine diesel engines not due to exceptional performance, but because it is common, dependable, and well suited to everyday cruising boats.

Initial situation of the engine

The sailboat owner had gone through several mount replacements. The sailboat had been equipped with the engine mounts shown below since 2013, when the original MD2030 was replaced with the current D1-30.

Replacement to the ELLEBOGEN GTM SDD 40

Based on the technical characteristics of the D1-30 engine, such as weight, position of the mounts and position of CoG, four Ellebogen GT-M SDD40 mounts were selected.  The mounts incorporate a high damping compound that, for three-cylinder engines, is very beneficial to keep the engine steady.  Below are the dimensional characteristics.

VIDEO “AFTER”

Roberto recorded a video showcasing the engine’s condition with the newly installed mounts. Below is the footage demonstrating the engine with the Ellebogen GTM SDD40 mounts.

Important notes on the installation

During the installation of the new engine mounts, Roberto encountered several challenges that required adjustments and improvisations:

Mount Height Adjustment: The nuts incorporated on the Ellebogen mounts were too thick. They were taller than the original ones. Roberto had to use thinner ones from those Ellebogen mounts that had a higher levelling capability. Ellebogen GTM mounts now always incorporate slimmer nuts, allowing the overall height to be adjusted to the minimum.

More information on the GT mounts

The Ellebogen GT mounts are universal marine engine mounts. They incorporate a failsafe interlocking metal part as shown in the below image.

This feature allows them to withstand high traction forces.

The mounts have undergone rigorous fatigue testing, ensuring optimal performance.

The metal parts are treated with Zinc-Nickel allowing a salt spray resistance of 760H to red corrosion and, on top of this, there is a double coat of PU black paint. This allows similar anticorrosive results to Stainless steel AISI 304. For more information on corrosion resistance, click on this Link
